Just time to add these before dinner, a reup of DT's 'Review' as I've been alerted to its absence from this blog - I can't remember if I posted this and it disappeared, or just dreamt that I posted it. I certainly ripped it though, and here it is along with 'Manhattan Millionare' which ironically features a picture of a 'man, no hat on'. Oh never mind.

It seems I cannot glance at this LP cover without perceiving a small monkey sitting on his shoulder - but on a diet of sex omlettes you may feel the same.

Back to the Teacore now, and Dennis Hayward serves up a particularly eclectic mix with Party Dances; see the back of the CD case below and gasp in awe at the scope of the man's talents. To have both Russ Abbott's 'Atmosphere' and 'The Birdy Song' on the same CD is surely enough to expect from any artist, but Den just has to go the extra mile - most likely a lot further than most of his audience can get.

The DX+ Tape

What better way to prompt my sudden reappearance on this blog? After more than a year I am back for another half-hearted burst of activity, and what a treat I have here.

I have been spurred into action as I have discovered a tape I thought was lost forever! This was one of those items you start looking for one day and end up turning everything upside down in search of. In this instance, I was reduced to individually testing all my cassettes (in case the label had fallen off) before reluctantly accepting that it was gone. This was about 7 or 8 years ago!

Then today I went through a box of CD-Rom related bits and bobs with the idea of getting rid of unused CD-RWs and jewel cases, which I sorted out quite well. Nothing more to it, but about 12 hours later I casually picked up a tape which was sitting about to glance at what it was - and it was this tape! What a gift to the world!

Now some may accuse me of overselling what might appear to be 90 minutes of intensley irritating noise and the mad ravings of an eccentric friend of a friend who I haven't seen for years - and I wouldn't have a leg to stand on, particularly if it was broken and gangrenous and I was lost in the desert with Milton Keynes on fire.

Be warned as this contains swearing and sex with animals, although the animals in question have been specially adapted for the purpose.

I have let my account with Rapidshare slide as I wasn't too impressed with their changes of a few yonks ago, so I will be uploading on Hotfile and Oron.

Howard McCullough Plays

Now an offering of Howard McCullough's, and his style is a little quieter than his suit.

It's a sound similar to Ena Baga's - a little bit of rhythm here and there, and a gentle pulsation as Howard tickles the plastic ivories. A point of interest would be Howard's rendition of 'The Stripper' which would certainly get me hot under the collar, if it didn't conjour up the image of Ena Baga taking her clothes off.

This sounds like I've gone overboard on the dynamic compression, but it was on the record - for that 'breathy vibe' I suppose..

I know this one has been around before, but I felt compelled to get my own vinyl copy as I was listening to 'Ballin' the Jack' so much. The rip I had could have been better, so now here is the better rip!

I had never heard 'Ballin' the Jack' before, so I went looking for an old version and found this from the 1940s by Kid Ory which is very enjoyable!

Apologies for the 6 week gap - if being abducted by aliens wasn't enough, I've had to hunt around for a special cushion as well!

I have disciplined children very effectively this way, by playing this over and over again for every waking hour and turning it off only when the wretches have been particularly good, like when they've dug up more than their quota of coal.

Some out there might see this as an innocent children's record, but those shrill, posh voices probably belong to children who've strangled their ponies. You've been warned!

After trawling the excellent thelibraryhunt (no, it didn't take all of six weeks!), I was amazed I had one which wasn't there, so here it is as a re-up.

Billed on the back cover as a companion to KPM 1240 'Action World' it has some great smooth hi-tec style tracks which are worth grabbing. This was ripped 3 years ago so no real collector's protocol was used, the track titles are untagged but for the filenames, and I decided to have the spoken track numbers at the end of the preceding track which seemed more listener friendly.

I can do a fresh rip at 320kbps and all the other stuff if there's any interest..

Eventually!

Ceefax!

Prompted by the posting of a few Ceefax tracks on Cosmobells, I thought I'd dust off my collection as there seems to be an interest!

There's 44 tracks here, and I recorded them off the telly around 1999 - they were recorded straight onto Minidisc, but I could only record from TV in mono. Although it was just a B&W portable, the sound quality is superb, and due to a lack of MDs/resources I chucked out a few of the slower tunes, so I have an unusually funky collection here for you too!

Also there are a few fadeouts - but they are genuine BBC transmission fadeouts, probably to make way for 'The Learning Zone' if memory serves..

Introducing Bernard Brooks, who from the title of this CD is one of the more prolific of our sequence dancing players. He's the originator of the 'sequence quack', a charming staccato effect which comes from his stabbing his organ. A crude innuendo I'm sure you'll agree, but there's a certain amount which I have to write here in order to not look lazy, and I'm certainly up against it what with all the dancing I'm doing. This is a re-rip at 256kbps.

Includes Bernard's version of 'An Ordinary Copper' - the theme from 'Dixon of Dock Green'.

Just for a change, here's a nice bit of British Ska courtesy of Buster Bloodvessel and crew - I say a change, although there is a lot of Hammond to be found here too - so everyone's happy!

The LP 'Gosh It's..' I stole from my brother and took to a Christmas school disco (I use the term loosely as we had a record player in the classroom which barely qualifies) and being mindful of thieves (being one myself), I elected to put my name on the record which was my eventual downfall. I have fond memories of us dancing to 'Can Can', well worth a black eye.

George Baker Selection - The Best of Baker

This is one of the first records I had - it was sent to me as a birthday present by our local radio station, as I'd been registered with their 'get your name read out on your birthday' club. I'm sure you'd agree that many a 7 or 8 year old boy would place an LP such as this in high esteem, or could that assumption be a bad misjudgement?

The sticker on the cover marked 'Prize' seems to be radio-speak for 'We need more room for Blondie records' and the act of sending such records out to young children who never did anything other than to have a birthday, is perhaps a good example of radio stations knowing just what their listeners want.

Anyway, George Baker Selection was Rory McGrath's first band, and he certainly pays homage to his Spanish roots with this album. The first track 'Paloma Blanca' you may know better as the Typhoo tea tune 'Ooh what a lovely cuppa'(performed by Cilla Black if I remember rightly).

Rory certainly had his moments as a fashion-conscious pop star however, as shortly before this cover picture was taken, he had his left nipple piercing go septic and he had to hold a poultice over it for a short while!

In response to the Tunbridge Wells riots of 1987 which were triggered by a dearth of Dennis Hayward records in the area, this LPs was rushed out. There was no time for a photo differing from that of the first Sequence Time LP, as the only other thing which would placate the rampaging throngs of boisterous biddies was Battenburg cake, which can be so dear these days.

Includes Dennis's rendition of 'Always There', the theme from TV's 'Howard's Way', or as it was known in the studio - 'Hayward's Way' which gave a good chuckle to all involved.

Did you know the UK had its own Elvis? Oh yes, back in the early 80's, old Shakin' here was very popular, Wikipedia has him as the biggest-selling solo male singer of the 80s, but maybe he's been on the site editing it.

The back cover has a nice David Brent feel about it, but it makes you wonder what pictures they rejected before they settled on that one..

The LP didn't have 'This Ole House', his first number 1 (I think) so I stuck it on as a bonus track. I wonder if Shaky's had the shingles yet?

Join the Big Ben [add instrument here] Band as they travel far west of Westminster to the Pacific Ocean to thrill us with the usual cover versions they do. But with those Hawaiian guitars which are so laid back, you have to sit down to play them..

Being the Big Ben [add instrument here] Band, they had to operate on Greenwich Mean Time, leading to some hilarious scenes at the Honolulu studios when they would turn up bright and early at 11pm! Of course, the recording schedule was soon made a mockery of - and the band had to fly back to Britain and record the album in a dingy studio in Battersea instead.

Here's a chance to sample the live act produced by this Tough couple, The Krankies! Best known as Crackerjack regulars,(Crackerjack!)some of this stuff most certainly wouldn't have made it to our screens - for it's a bit rude! And probably a good picture of a comedy routine in 1976..

We get live versions of 'Sonny Boy' and 'Where's Me Mam?' on the A side as well as the live act, and the B side consists of traditional Scottish tunes by the sound of it, which are enjoyable enough. No bagpipes.

Back to the keyboards - and what a treat I have for you now, a sound worthy of a thousand early 80s kids shows and a drum backing from the machine itself, what more could you ask for?

Well you could ask for a medley starting with 'Feeling Groovy' and ending with 'Pop Goes the Weasel', which is a tall order - but Peter provides! Also check out 'The Easy Winners' which I've played a fair few times since I got this record..

'Sleepers Awake' you may know as Kenny Everett's miming clown music, and very loungey that one is, with a few Kraftwerky sounds there it sounds to me.

And his War of the Worlds rendition, in which he has employed the cheesy rythmns available to enhance the dramatic chords therein. A perfect match!

How can I say anything bad about this? It would feel like kicking a little puppy.

I'll have a go though, as this record contains some of the very worst saxophone solos of the 1980s - only the sax solo from Squeeze's 'Hourglass' compares! And Wax's 'Bridge to Your Heart' thinking about it.

Of course it's not all bad sax, Su throws out a few belters here, Su's 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' is a power ballad worthy of praise - Bonny Tyler couldn't hold a candle to it frankly. Of course there's 'Starting Together' here as well, which ought to be played at every wedding - remember, the old phrase 'Something borrowed, something blue, something old and something Su' should render divorce lawyers hungry everywhere.

So treat yourself to some 80s hideousness akin to the fashion choices displayed on the back of this LP, I particularly like Su's unicorn hairpiece in these shots.

Sample the matrimonial magnificence of 'Starting Together' below as found on Youtube, also I found an excellent rendition of 'Back In The USSR' there by Su - sadly not included on this LP.

Being a devotee of music and such from times past, this one really appeals as the thought of a record like this being released now is really er.. unthinkable! And the thing was aimed at children as well, brilliant!

If anyone out there is upset at the sight of a white man masquerading as a black man, then go and complain about Obama! Besides, Geoff Love penned 3 of the tracks on this LP and if it's good enough for Geoff..

Alas there aren't any jaunty tracks entitled 'Coming Over Here Stealing Our Women' or anything like that, but there is one called 'A Froggie Went a Courtin' which I thought was a bit strong. Geoff Love sings on that one by the way. It's an enjoyable listen, with a new twist given to one or two traditional songs - for example, there's a swing version of 'Ten Green Bottles' on side 2 not to be missed!

Balloons are mandatory in these situations of course, but the abandoned drum kit gives a unsettling feeling, Keith Moon off on one again probably.

And now, the 'storybook' LP, which I unwrapped from the cellophane to rip (that's a quid gone from the value!) - however there was still the odd pop and the moisture had got in, rusting the staples holding the 'souvenir photo album' together so it fell apart as I was getting the pictures..

Still, you can follow the gripping story without having to watch the film - why don't they just do that in the first place?

Teacore now, and here's Dennis with his best shirt on to prove how he can make the ladies dance while he moves his fingers up and down.

It appears that Dennis's keyboard got ripped off a bit here, but I assure you the record is unaffected. It starts with a medley featuring 'I've got sixpence' - a proud boast indeed, and 'A nice cup of tea' which I'm sure we'll all need after working up a thirst dancing to Dennis's wonderful music.

..Seems the ladies below were in a similar situation as shown in this clipping from the Eastbourne Herald of Friday May 18th 2001 - biscuits are always an option of course.

We all know what Wimbledon is best known for, and here they are on their own LP..

Contains the full version of the theme tune so grab it quick. This didn't have their best known song 'Remember You're a Womble' on it, so I've included it as a bonus track for you listening pleasure.

The Wombles never made it big in the US unfortunately, as 'The Wombles of Davis Cup Common' didn't have the same ring to it.

The Wombles have since gone their separate ways - Great Uncle Bulgaria died of TB in 1983 and Madame Cholet was torn apart by the hounds of the Hertfordshire Hunt whilst doing a daytime TV cookery spot in 1987. Bungo still has success however - he taught David Blain everything he knows.

Mud - Rock

More classic glam rock now, and here's Mud paying tribute to glam's rock & roll roots with a few oldies covered, with just a bit of newer stuff.

They cover 'The Hippy Hippy Shake', which sounds ahead of its time for 1974 - very punky. Also judging from the cover, one of the group members seems to think they're a member of Kajagoogoo, nice trouser suit there.

They've gone for the 'party atmos' style LP here, enlisting the help of 'Gate Crashers Ltd' for the 'party noises' according to the back cover. Also some bloke called Geoffrey introduces the music at the start so I cut him off and made an intro track of him, so as to avoid hindrance of any enjoyment derived from the first track 'Rocket'..

They decided to re-record some of their biggest hits (Dynamite, The Cat Crept In and Tiger Feet) as a medley for this album according to mudrock.org.uk which seems a bit daft, but I suppose medleys were more acceptable in the 70s!

The Glitter Band - Hey!

Masking tape aside, this is certainly one of the better LP covers from a time when being able to play an instrument took priority over being attractive.

Put together originally to back Gary Glitter, they grew legs of their own and became more successful than Mr Gadd himself - despite a few administrative oversights.

Due to a foul-up while booking studio time for this LP, the band had only one day to record all the tracks - and had to literally make 'Hey!' while the sun shined.

Who can resist a record with a cover like this? I would have loved to be at one of these photo sessions, they must have conjured such a party spirit just with the trousers alone!

Despite the questionable cover, there one or two very good tracks on here. There's a bit of distortion at the start of the tracks on the outside of the record though, but the better tracks aren't affected. For me, 'Love for Sale' and 'Del Segno' are firm favourites already, especially 'Del Signo' which has 'Ceefax' all the way through it - classic.

All about Derek's prowess 'on the mic' and such. But the irony of all this showing off is that it's done in such a crappy way - it's hilarious!

This record is certainly def - and hearing it, you'll wish you were def as well.

As everyone knows, it's party season - and here's the perfect record. There comes a point in every party when you just want everyone to sod off, and the brandishment of this recording should get those freeloading bastards off your property in no time.

As a double whammy, you can recite some of the details on the back cover, maybe placing emphasis on certain words to heighten any perception of your interest in Gavioli organs. Beware however, as party-lingerers are statistically more likely to have a genuine interest in such matters.

While this record contains some great loungey covers courtesy of Cyril Stapleton, I'm afraid it's about as Brazilian as bread and dripping - I was looking forward to some cha-chas or fandangos from the very accomplished-looking musicians on the cover (that big one serves to show you should learn to play the trumpet without looking at the buttons), but it's a Latin flatline.

From a lounge-covers point of view however, phooar - I wasn't disappointed..!

I'm sure every kid remembers that moment when they found out Jimmy Krankie was actually a woman and she was married to her own 'dad' - this betrayal destroyed my enjoyment of children's variety acts thereafter. I grew convinced that Bernie Clifton ate human flesh, and that The Great Soprendo wanted to kill me.

Time for an offering or three from producer Frank Farian, in the form of Boney M. A band name inspired by Napoleon Bonaparte (sort of), and a band composed of two singers and two mutes.

Farian kept Bobby Farrell's and Maizie Williams' vocal chords in a safe deposit box under the terms of their contracts, in the Vokalsbank in Germany.

He then underwent an operation to perfect his falsetto, and the resulting material put into his throat to graft on a second larynx. Afterwards becoming highly skilled in the art of throwing his voice so the band could do live performances..

I like to think of them more as 'unfairgrounds', being full of local chavs charged over the odds for low-quality confectionery and weak centrifugal forces, but maybe I'm just an old git.

Sat around picking my nose and ripping crap records. One of them sounded like the dog had dragged it out of the coal shed, but it sounded lovely on Bert Baxter's gramophone when I tried it, I probably got that idea because I'm an intellectual.

Some of the tracks are truly appalling, and others fill me with such angst - such as 'Sorry, Gotta Do It' with its synth-punches Barry Kent throws (thank goodness I have my poetry). I don't know where the original Ian Dury theme got to, the last I heard it was here.

I'm glad I got the beetroot juice off the cover after bumping into a half-empty jar on Bert's sideboard, I thought some had splashed on my face as well. But just my luck - more spots!

Now for another 50th anniversary record (and re-up)- this time it's the BBC, the oldest broadcaster in the world. Set up in 1922, its remit under its Royal Charter is to -

'be entirely independent of any private or governmental influence. It is thereby required to be free from both political and commercial influence and answer only to its viewers and listeners.'

Hmmm..

Anyway here's the record (with a bit of WWII as well naturally enough), saluting the organisation which brought us Neighbours, The Teletubbies, hours of bloody cricket, Big Break, Andi Peters, Mr Blobby, hours of bloody snooker, The Archers, etc.

Don Estelle and Windsor Davies - Sing Lofty

Finally in this war of attrition, we have the soothing tones of Lofty/Don Estelle coupled with the harsh tones of Windsor Davies' Sergeant-Major Williams. Windsor Davies doesn't sing that much (or at all- when he does pipe up he tends toward a William Shatner talky style) but is included as nobody would have bought the LP otherwise.

Shame, as Don (who sadly died in 2003) had a singing voice which harks back to the 30s - a lot of songs here sound like they're from the Singing Detective soundtrack, and one or two are. This up includes 'Whispering Grass' which doesn't appear on the record but I've thrown it in because I'm so nice.

More recently Don had a brief role as 'Little Don' in the first series of 'The League of Gentlemen' as a zookeeper looking after the 'Roundabout Zoo' - a zoo on a roundabout island in the road.

Windsor Davies is still around of course, and 80 next year! I used to think he was the hardest man on telly - he was the Phil Mitchell of the 70s.. I could probably deck him now, though.

Klaus Wunderlich - In The Miller Mood

Don your flight jackets and hand out some stockings and gum! Dere's a pack o' Camels each in it for ya boys, get da stuff from da BBC film crew over dere..

On his Pigeonshit debut, Herr Wunderlich brings us the soothing vibes of Glenn Miller - with a sprinkling of his own style, of course. He sure knows how to knock 'em out on his fancy new Wersi Helios - and can't resist sticking the odd Moogy bit in here and there either, to freshen those old classics for our ears.

What could be more in the spirit of reconciliation? It is indeed a tear-jerking thought that a German should pay tribute to Glenn Miller, who was such a morale boosting inspiration for the Allied forces. But perhaps not surprising, if we remember that many ordinary Germans at that time weren't having that much fun. Klaus may well have seen a liberation, not an invasion.

This could however just be the result of a guilty conscience - we still don't know what happened to that plane, do we Klaus?

Clive Dunn - Permission to Sing Sir

And this is an opportune moment for another Dad's Army addition(re-up), my original blurb-

I didn't expect much from this record, but some of these tracks are very good! The first track, 'Permission to Sing Sir' ends up like the theme to 'the Red Hand gang', with lots of kids singing 'la la la'. Dunn tries his best with the 'la la' stuff but fails and improvises instead.'Simone' is a track which could have been lifted from a Small Faces album- on looking at the credits for this song, I spy the name Hawkshaw! He gets everywhere..

If that doesn't grab you, try Corporal Jones's rendition of 'What the World Needs Now is Love', by Bacharach - played by John Nettles of course.

Dunn is still keen on dressing up as someone 30 years his senior in his spare time, which unfortunately means that he pretends to be dead. 'He spends all day lying in a shallow ditch at the bottom of the garden after rubbing putrifying offal into his clothes' said his long-suffering wife. 'It's a good job he's a butcher, meat can be so expensive' she added.

And the LP cover? They don't like it up 'em.

Dad's Army - The Radio Shows

Continuing the war theme, here's all three series of the Dad's Army radio shows - adapted from telly. I thought I'd add it as it was made with money extorted from us Brits (much like war itself!), but keep it quiet - loose lips and all that.

After this well-loved sit-com had finished, the characters had mixed fortunes. Private Walker did well selling his crisps of course, Sergeant Wilson built a sporting goods empire and Mrs Fox made a fortune from her biscuits, as well as having chart success with the hit 'Imagine Me, Imagine You'.

Alas, Captain Mainwaring fell on hard times - and still works in Walmington-on-Sea, for one of the larger supermarket chains.

Not ripped by me, bitrates vary but each half hour show is about 5Mb - 7Mb. Sound quality is just fine. Archives can be extracted independently.

Salute in Sound - 50th Anniversary of the RAF

Alright you chaps, listen to me.

Group Capt. Douglas Bader, the man with the tin legs, celebrates the (then) 50th anniversary of the RAF by putt-putt-putting out this record describing a few of the old pre-war planes, as well as hurricanes, spitfires and more recent jet-propelled planes.

Listen to that voice - there's the grit and determination there which helped defeat the menace of the Luftwaffe, and helped him end up in Colditz, along with David McCallum and John Mills.

After he left the RAF he starred as that indispensable butler in 'The Admirable Crichton', and after he died he had his whole body made out of tin - and went on to more success in 'Red Dwarf'.

A statue of him was recently unveiled at Goodwood, near Chichester. The sculptor thought it fitting that since the statue was metal, then it should have real legs, and there seems to be no shortage of replacements from the nearby St Richard's Hospital. Good thing too - as the legs start to smell before long - if they aren't first dragged away by stray dogs.

Before I go any further, this isn't the 2003 Hollywood version of 'The Singing Detective' - that soundtrack has probably got 'New Kids on the Block' on it or some rapping.

This is mostly pre-war stuff, but who cares? There's some very laid-back music here.

There are also two of the most famous songs from WWII - Lili Marlene (sung here in both English and German no less!) and Vera Lynn's crowning glory, with another tedious yarn..

During the early years of the war, things were tough for everyone - including Vera Lynn. Like most, she would suppliment her rations by eating any hedgehogs or rabbits she found run over by cars in the road. But even this food source became scarce, and prompted the line 'Wheel meat again, don't know where, don't know when..'

I joke about rapping, but there seems to be a mid-song talky bit in The Ink Spots' 'Do I Worry?' - do they think they're 2Unlimited or what?

Here's a timely upload, this cover is what I presume is a publicity shot taken ready for the then upcoming 'Operation Pied Piper' to go into effect, where children (mostly) were ferried out of the cities to safer spots in the country. The back cover says the picture was taken on August 29th, 1939, making it 70 years and 2 days old! But wait, according to Wikipedia-

'The official evacuation was declared on August 31st, but began on September 1st..'

That's 70 years ago right now, so happy 70th, 'Operation Pied Piper'!!

Yes, thousands of children were assembled at train stations all over, ready for their evacuations - but I won't go too much into how they went to the toilet in those days.

Strange about the name though, as in the story 'The Pied Piper', the children were led away to be drowned (in the version I know), or held for ransom - and it took place in Germany..

Anyway, there's some real wartime treats here - Noel Coward does a couple of ditties, there's 3 from George Formby including 'Mr Wu's an air raid warden now', (I'm glad they had the ARP wardens to look after the synthesisers) and Arthur Askey with 'The Thing-ummy-bob', a celebration of the advantages to security which compartmentalisation brings.

Bringing up the rear, a stirring song aimed at the Axis forces and their misgided ideologies of racial supremacy, called 'The Jap and the Wop and the Hun'.

So roll up for a rip-roaring, coupon saving, banana wanting, egg powdering ride down the bomb damaged music hall (still open for business).

Blimey, is that the time? Yes, the 70th anniversary of the Second World War is looming like a big barrage balloon - so I'm going to get all my war-related produce up here.

By way of a little prelude (much as the Great War itself turned out to be), here's a re-up of Warren Mitchell acting the goat and skylarking (dry up!), singing the sort of songs our brave chaps would have sung before they were ordered to march towards machine guns..

A note to any German readers - this is certainly not intended as schadenfreude, we were all made fools of!

My original blurb-

I bought this record for the cover alone, and I expected the contents to be truly awful. Although I wouldn't necessarily want my neighbours to hear me playing it too much, it's actually enjoyable!

All done in a music hall vaudeville style, it's bound to entertain - from the jaunty, plinky plonky sound of 'Take me back to dear old Blighty' to the unmistakable tune of 'For me and my gal' which is bound to set you pacing the room like Grandpa Potts from 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' after too many pink gins..

Brace yourselves for some 'Greek urn' style gags here too.

edit - I'd be very interested in hearing the songs/music the Germans had, the sort of period music Das Boot had was very good.. can anyone recommend any good compilations?

The Rolf Harris Show

Before he made a career out of dying animals, Rolf had his own Saturday night show - although this was before my time so I never saw it myself. Shame, because if this record is anything to go by, it would knock today's Saturday evening light entertainment shows into a corked hat.

On the first track 'Poor Jenny', Harris recalls taking his girlfriend out and how he left her to be arrested after she was punched at a party and knocked out. You'd never think it would you? 'Roochama' has Rolf singing in Hindi (or whatever - how would I know?) in a vintage Bollywood-sounding piece, complete with wobbleboard..

His trusty old standard 'Jake the Peg' is on here but alas no 'Tie me kangaroo down, sport' - the famous death-bed marsupial bondage request song was recorded five years earlier (1963) and you can't have it on every record he did I suppose.

Little know fact - At points during the making of the 'Animal Hospital' series of programmes, all the animals kept getting better and Rolf was faced with no option than to injure a few himself. One insider commented - 'He would phone the vets surgery he was due to be working at that day and put on the voice of an old lady, reporting a cat or dog with a broken leg - we always knew it was him because he'd say 'cobber' and move the word 'but' to the end of a sentence. He would then turn up for filming with scratches on his face and arms'.

This was to be a 'Crate to Blog Challenge', but this is such a goodie I had to take a bit of time over it because Pigeonshit does not compromise on quality. Rest assured however, this was sitting in a rainy carpark not 5 hours ago.

It's 80s crap! Yaaay!

There are a few moments here which make good listening, but there's also a slice of 80s doggerel at its worst.

There's the theme from 'Connie' - which is as forgettable as the show itself, provided you heard of it in order to forget it. Sorry for reminding you about it now.

There's some kind of track from Miami Vice on there but not the theme itself, what's going on there - it clearly says 'Miami Vice' on the cover, bloody swizz. And on the second volume we're treated to the abominable 'Surprise Surprise!' theme tune which I play now and again, just to remind myself how nice it is to not listen to it. Did you know Sue Pollard released a single? Yep, that's here too.

On the up-side, there's Chas & Dave on both records with their TV offerings 'Crackerjack' and 'In Sickness and in Health'..'Blott on the Landscape'.. And an early version of the 'The Bill' theme tune with a funky bit a couple of minutes in!

Now there's a new club in town..

A free disease for every member, free entry into Trafalgar AND St Marks Squares, plus a copy of the former UK number 1, 'Mouldy Old Dough' by Lieutenant Pigeon (which you can probably get on Ebay). Just send in a few bits of bread or some old chips, and you're all set.

Anyway, Playgroup Song Time is very worrying indeed - the nursery rhymes on this record are carried on until they reach their conclusions, which are quite sinister sometimes. And all brought into sharp relief by the classically trained singers who sound as though they mean it. Funnily enough, this was done at the KPM Studios.

Sorry for the scribble on the cover, I assure you that the child responsible was locked in an attic in order to collect a dozen spiders for their dinner. I've been listening to too many nursery rhymes..

They had an excellent sense of timing, as they were on telly when I was a kid and I found their jokes funny.

You may not know that Delia Derbyshire used to be known as Delia Nottinghamshire, but she had to change her name as she could only get offers of work from The Radiophonic Worksop.

Malcolm Clarke works on the Delaware (below).. so named as it was going 'lovely jubbley' and 'you dipstick!' as far back as the mid seventies.

Well you're a little bit wrong, because on side 2 there's a track called 'Best Pair of Legs in the Business' which wouldn't be out of place in one of the 'On the Buses' films. This might be down to Harry Robinson, who did the music for loads of British films in the 70s, the most notable of which is (for me) 'Glitterball' by the Children's Film Foundation - if anyone has the film please let me watch it again, I'm dying here! Update, request may be filled.. watch out.

Anyway I'll shut up and get on with it- this Abbey Road studio is famous for you know who, and I feel dirty.

Crate to Blog: Hammond Dancing Ohne Pause

Well I've been carbooting today, and have I hit a motherlode of cheese! Anyway this is my first 'Crate to Blog' time trial and it's not good. The buses were all driven by Jeremy Beadle today (yes I know he's dead, and he couldn't have driven all the buses at once anyway could he? Give me a break).

Every time I went near a bus stop he would be there just a touch sooner. And if he wasn't, there would be a notice on the bus stop saying 'not in use'. My bloody hip's giving me gyp now I tell you.

It's strange though, how I can unnecessarily spend time telling you about how the buses increased this first CTB time trial result. I suppose moaning about buses is more important.

Time: 4 hours 30 minutes = Crap!

I picked this one out pretty much randomly and it's great! In fact I'm fairly sure one of these tracks was used in an episode of Father Ted..

Back with the Teadance stuff now (I'm coining the phrase 'Teacore' although I have also considered 'Heavy Kettle', 'Rock Cake & Roll' and 'Bingo Flava').

I would have started with 'Dancin' Time 1' but I swapped it for some jam.

You can tell from the cover that a download is warranted- look at his little face! He's done it again and brought us more organ gold- the pride he surely feels seems to burst from the page. Shame about volume 1, but it was great jam.

Yes it's him from the Monkees - I'm sure he wouldn't want to be associated with the Monkees all his life, but tough, you joined a boyband and you're stuck with it mate.

Anyway, this is a bit more laid back and the first track 'Rio' is pretty good (not the same as 'Rio' by Duran Duran by the way [not the same Duran Duran as in Barbarella by the way]). Seems this was done in Nashville and it is a bit country, with a bit of a bluesy streak as well.

I've worked for Royal Mail in sorting offices before, and its possibly the closest you can get to prison without being arrested. All you can smell is farts and cheap aftershave, and everyone wears a badly fitting blue shirt. Unless of course you get a cushy number like Postman Pat, bastard.

There are no farts in Greendale of course, and Reverend Timms wears Chanel Egoiste. I can imagine a teadance taking place there, it's that sort of place. Put up a brightly coloured burgular alarm on your property and they'll be complaining to the council.

Ooh lovely! This is the first upload in a super series of albums for community centres and church halls all over. Be sure to buy your cakes late in the day because the baker sells 'em cheap, see? And none of that roggin roll or whatever it is - I had bloody beatniks move in next door once, etc.

You can tell that this is a particualrly arresting cover, but it appears that this album contains 'Expilicit Lyrics'. Fear not, I put that sticker there as a joke a while back and forgot about it. I assure you, any violent or malevolent intent herein is of a much more subtle and damaging nature. Statistically, most listeners to this sort of music are dead within ten years.

Despite the erronious sticker, parents should be very concerned if their children are listening to this stuff, mine certainly are.

Now a re-up of an old classic! Most stars these days like to get off their heads, but worzel prefers to get his head off! I'm a fan some of the incidental/background music in the show but can't get hold of anything much - can anyone help?

Little known fact*
Jon Pertwee insisted on recording these tracks dressed as Worzel Gummidge, and wouldn't sing unless a cup of tea/slice of cake was provided for him on an hourly basis. Similarly Una Stubbs recorded her parts only after she could access the trolley full of cream cakes mentioned in her contract.

I would have tried to get a pic of my LP cover on here but couldn't be aaaaaaaaaar-sed!

Update - I've found the pics from when I ripped this a couple of years ago, so grab them if you want them, they are not in the archive.

For my first proper post here, a series of albums I created from a reel-to-reel tape which turned up with my trusty Sony TC-377 when I got it off t'internet a few years ago. I know nothing about the previous owner as I got it from a house clearance dealer, so a man could have done these of course. But 'Old Man Playing Badly' doesn't have the same ring to it.
